Karl Hermann Albrecht (born April 4, 1823 in Leipzig , † January 18, 1904 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German teacher and theoretician of shorthand . He is considered one of the pioneers of Gabelsberg's shorthand .

Life

Karl Albrecht was the son of the Beutler journeyman Johann Heinrich Albrecht and his wife Caroline Eleonore née Zehl. He attended the Leipzig Ratsfreischule and the Nikolaischule .

From 1843 he studied at the University of Leipzig Jura and new languages and graduated with doctorate to Dr. phil. from. In 1848 he began working as a high school teacher for modern languages ​​and shorthand at a Leipzig school.

In the same year he joined the Leipzig Fatherland Association founded by Robert Blum and was one of "Leipzig's rooters", as the 1848 revolutionaries were called here. Because of his participation in the Dresden May Uprising in 1849, he was imprisoned for three months. Another prison term of 27 months followed in 1851.

In 1854 he resumed teaching at various Leipzig schools, which lasted until 1882. In 1861 he became active in the industrial education association founded by Oskar Mothes , in which the Gabelsberger shorthand was now also taught. In 1864 he was one of the founders of the Leipzig Schreberverein and served on its board for three years.

But his particular zeal was in shorthand. In addition to his lessons and the practical work as a stenographer at the start of negotiations, it was important to him to improve the didactics of the shorthand lessons. To this end, he transferred the methodology developed by Johann Franz Ahn for French lessons to shorthand with great success . For the Gabelsberger shorthand he developed a comprehensive doctrine of vocalization. But he was also active in the organizational area. From 1865 to 1892 he headed the Allgemeine Deutsche Stenographenzeitung . He gave speeches at stenographers congresses and in 1889 represented the German Stenographers Association at the 2nd International Stenographers Congress in Paris .

In 1850 Karl Albrecht married Johanna Sophie Höhm from Crottendorf in the Ore Mountains . The couple had two daughters.
