Lorenz von Stein (born November 15, 1815 in Borby near Eckernförde as Wasmer Jakob Lorentz , † September 23, 1890 in Hadersdorf-Weidlingau ) was a German constitutional law teacher , sociologist and economist .

Life

Until 1832 he was a student at the Christian nursing home in Eckernförde . From 1835 to 1839 Lorenz von Stein studied philosophy and law at the universities in Kiel and Jena . During his studies in 1836 he became a member of the Albertina fraternity in Kiel and in 1837 a member of the United Fraternity at the Jena Castle Cellar . Study and research stays in Berlin and Paris followed in 1841/42. After completing his habilitation in Kiel, he became a private lecturer there and, in 1846, an associate professor of political science. In 1848, Stein stayed again in Paris as an observer for the Frankfurt National Assembly .

In the elections for the constituent Schleswig-Holstein regional assembly in 1848, he failed in the 4th Holstein electoral district (Kiel, Plön). In a by-election on March 28, 1850, he was then elected to the state assembly in the 23rd Holstein electoral district (Preetz).

Because of his active participation in the Schleswig-Holstein movement against Denmark, he was relieved of his professorship in Kiel in 1852. From 1855 he was a full professor of political economy at the University of Vienna , where he worked for 30 years. In December 1874 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .

He died in 1890 on his country estate in Weidlingau near Vienna. Stein was buried in the Matzleinsdorf Evangelical Cemetery (Group 17, No. 227). In Vienna- Penzing (14th district) the Lorenz-Stein-Straße is named after him and in Eckernförde the Lorenz-von-Stein-Ring .

His son Alwin Stein (* 1848 in Kiel, † 1919 in Vienna) was a painter.

Work and effect

As one of the first German interpreters of French socialism and communism, Stein provided significant impulses for the history of political ideas in Germany. In his early theoretical work, Stein tried to mediate between the system-critical perspective of socialism and communism with the bourgeois-liberal idea of progress.

In his later theoretical writings, Stein removed the rigid opposition between the general idea of the state and the particular social interests in each case. He postulated a shift in the task of public action from the rule of law to the welfare state . The term “ social democracy ” comes from him .

In 1860 von Stein divided the entire state property into state property and state domains . While he understood state property to mean all unprofitable goods, he referred to state domains as the “totality of state goods intended for primary production and agriculture” (ie agriculture and forestry , mining and fishing ). He called all income from state domains, that is, fiefs and leases, “Gesallen” .

An influence of Stein's ideas on Karl Marx is considered likely, but has not been proven. A special reception in Japan of the Meiji restoration is documented.
