Relief in memory of Lorenz von Stein on the building

In the former Christian nursing home (also known as Christian nursing home) from 1785 , old and impoverished soldiers from Copenhagen who were unable to serve as well as soldier widows and orphans were housed. Around 200 men, 60 women, 80 boys and 40 girls, all of whom had to wear uniforms , lived under strict military discipline under the supervision of Carl von Hessen . From 1820 a model school for "mutual teaching" was set up in the building. The best-known student was Lorenz von Stein , who is remembered by a bronze relief on the building. The home and school were closed in 1854.

From 1864 the building was used as a barracks for Prussian soldiers. The name Alte Kaserne , which is still known today, dates from this time . It has served as a residential building since 1870 .

Parts of the historical building complex were destroyed during later road construction work.
