The Roman Catholic parish church Grafenschlag stands on the west side of the market square in the market town of Grafenschlag in the Zwettl district in Lower Austria . The parish church consecrated to St. Martin of Tours belongs to the Deanery Zwettl of the diocese of St. Pölten . The church is a listed building .

history

A parish was adopted for the second half of the 12th century. The original building is late Gothic. The choir was demolished in 1478 and rebuilt, and in 1490 the church is called "consecrated to St. Martin". In 1776 the church and the tower burned down after a lightning strike, the tower was not given a new bell storey until 1778 and then a pyramid helmet in 1912. In 1786/87 the church received an altar from the repealed Dominican monastery in Tulln and an organ from the Nikolauskapelle at the Carthusian monastery in Aggsbach. In 1847 the roof, which had been covered with shingles, was covered with sheet metal. The sacristy and vestibule are from the 19th century. 1976 to 1977 the parish church is completely restored and a new nave is built.

architecture

The west tower presented is essentially medieval with a bell storey from 1776 and a pyramid helmet from 1912. The new nave building has a hipped roof and arched windows at the side. The choir has a three-sided closure and in the north buttresses and two-part tracery windows.

The late Gothic two-bay choir is slightly raised and closes on three sides and has a ribbed vault. The nave is a simple, undivided hall with an organ gallery. The northern sacristy has a barrel vault. The southern porch has a late Gothic shoulder arch portal.

The stained glass windows Herz Jesu and Herz Mariae are marked 1899, hl. Barbara with 1926, the east window with 1955.

Furnishing

The high altar is a baroque columned retable from the middle of the 18th century and was transferred here from the Dominican monastery in Tulln in 1786 and restored in 1977. The structure with a volute and a canopy bears a remarkable late Gothic Madonna figure from the second quarter of the 15th century with a baroque crown and setting and the baroque side figures Joachim and Joseph, in the upper picture shows Martin with the side figures John the Baptist and John the Evangelist.

Bruno Riedl built the organ .
