James Sheridan Knowles
James Sheridan Knowles (born May 12, 1784 in Cork , Ireland , † November 30, 1862 in Torquay , County Devon , England) was an Irish actor and dramatic poet.
Life
Knowles devoted himself to the stage early in Dublin and became, more as a result of his diligence than innate talent, a good performer, especially of character roles.
Knowles was better known as a dramatic poet. He opened his career as such with the tragedies: Caius Gracchus (1815) and Virginias (1820), which the latter was extremely well received, and followed this with numerous dramatic products (collected, London 1841–1843, 3 vols.) As theirs best The love chase (1838, also translated several times into German) applies.
Knowles was formed after the older English playwrights, especially Philip Massinger . A serious sense of morality is a characteristic of Knowles.
In 1845 he renounced the stage and turned to the subject of fiction, but with less luck. Formerly scattered in magazines he collected stories and sketches under the title The elocutionist (The elocutionist: a collection of pieces in prose and verse, ... adapted to display the art of reading ... preceded by an introduction, in which an attempt is made to simplify Walkers̓ system) (28th ed., Lond. 1884). In 1852, Knowles joined the Baptist Church, for which he also worked as a writer.
His grave is in the Glasgow Necropolis Cemetery near St Mungo's Cathedral in Glasgow .
