Makkovik ( Inuit name: Maquuvik ) is a municipality ( town ) in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

location

The parish belongs to the Census Division No. 11 . It is located on the south bank of Makkovik Bay on the north east coast of Labrador . Makkovik has a small airfield ( IATA : YFT). The village can usually be reached by plane from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, 215 km southwest . Between mid-June and mid-November there is a ferry connection from Goose Bay along the Labrador coast via Makkovik and Hopedale to Nain .

Residents

The 2016 census revealed a population of 377 inhabitants for the municipality. In the census in 2011 there were 361. This means that the population has increased slightly in recent years. The population is mainly Inuit or of mixed Inuit and European descent.

history

Makkovik was founded in 1860 as a trading post. In 1896 the Moravian Brethren established a mission in Makkovik. The mission building and the attached school were destroyed in a fire in 1958. In the 1950s, 150 Inuit were forcibly relocated from Nutak and Hebron to Makkovik. Between 1957 and 1961, the United States Air Force operated the Cape Makkovik Air Station radar station 15 km north of the settlement ( )

The climate is determined by the Labrador Current. Makkovik lies in the north of the cold temperate climate zone . This means that the place is not far from the arctic tree line . In the summer months of July and August the average temperature is 11–12 ° C, in the winter months of January and February it is −16.5 ° C.
