Hopedale ( Inuit name: Agvituk ) is a municipality ( town ) in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

location

The parish belongs to the Census Division No. 11 . It is located on the eastern tip of a peninsula on the north east coast of Labrador . An archipelago of numerous small islands lies off the coast. 152 km northwest of Hopedale is Nain , the northernmost permanent settlement in Labrador. Hopedale has a small airfield ( IATA : YHO). Hopedale is usually reached by air from Happy Valley-Goose Bay , 150 miles south . Between mid-June and mid-November there is a ferry service from Goose Bay along the Labrador Coast, which goes via Hopedale to Nain.

Residents

The 2016 census showed a population of 574 inhabitants for the municipality. In the census in 2011 there were 556. Thus, the population has increased slightly in recent years. The population is mainly Inuit or of mixed Inuit and European descent.

history

Originally there was an Inuit settlement called Agvituk on the site . In 1782 the Herrnhuter Brethren founded a mission called "Hoffental". The place was renamed Hopedale a little later . Between 1953 and 1968, the Hopedale Air Station radar station was operated as part of the Distant Early Warning Line at Hopedale . Since December 1, 2005, the legislature of the newly founded autonomous region of Nunatsiavut has been in Hopedale .

The climate is determined by the Labrador Current. Hopedale is located in the north of the cold temperate climate zone . In the summer months of July and August the average temperature is 10 ° C, in the winter months of January and February it is −16 ° C.
