Grade

Staff sailor was the highest rank of the rank group of the teams in the People's Navy of the former National People's Army (NVA) of the German Democratic Republic , which corresponds to the rank of " Hauptgefreiter " (OR-3) of the Bundeswehr . In the other NVA armed forces, the rank of corporal (OR-3) was equal to this nautical rank of "staff sailor " .

Because of the necessary six-month training at the fleet school, the Volksmarine almost exclusively used long-term temporary soldiers with moving units. As a result, it was found that the majority of the crews serving in the "Sailor Specialist" career achieved this rank, while Corporals were very rare in the land and air forces.
