history

The squadron was initially set up in 1957 as FAG-3 at the Brandenburg-Briest airfield , which had been taken over by the NVA air forces shortly before from the Group of Soviet Armed Forces in Germany (GSSD).

From 15 December 1959 made the reclassification and reformation, now at the new Basierungsstandort, the airbase Rothenburg . On January 5th and 6th, the Aviation Technical Battalion and the control and repair squadron moved to Rothenburg by rail. On March 1, 1961, the association was renamed Jagdfliegerausbildunggeschwader 15 (JAG-15) and the troop flag was awarded to it.

On March 1, 1970, the squadron was given the honorary name Heinz Kapelle .

After several structural changes, which were primarily appropriate to the changed training profile of the future military pilots, the final name was given to Fliegerausbildungsgeschwader 15 (FAG-15).

The special colloquial expression for this fighter pilot training association was "egg squadron"; a parody of the self-creation of the squadron: "eggs for every breakfast, all kinds!".

assignment

The task of the squadron was to train pilots for fighter planes and fighter bomb planes. To this end, the association was equipped for the simultaneous training of 100 flight students. To achieve this goal, an average of 5,300 flight hours were flown per training year.

From 1963, the flight instructors also took part in exercises with their aircraft as target actors, which were carried out by the LSK / LV command .

In the period from January 1960 to September 1990, a total of around 900 flight students completed a basic service of 120,000 hours of training in 38 flight courses at Rothenburg Air Base.
