With the commissioning of the first combat helicopter association of the NVA, Combat Helicopter Squadron 5 , in 1975, the scope of work of the helicopter squadron 34 , which is responsible for the training of personnel, expanded , as on the one hand the need for pilots increased and on the other hand an additional weapons operator for each combat helicopter crew , who also acted as 2nd pilot, had to be trained. At the end of the 1970s it became increasingly clear that to relieve the HG-34, which had to fulfill both training and transport tasks, the formation of a special unit was necessary. From 5 to 16 November 1981, therefore, the helicopter training squadron 35 was formed in Brandenburg-Briest and subordinated to the officers' college of the LSK / LV in Kamenz. The staff was taken over from the 3rd season and parts of the 2nd season of the HG-34 on December 1. The helicopter fleet, which initially comprised four chains with a total of 16 Mi-2 and four chains with six Mi-8T and seven Mi-8PS, was spun off from the HG-34 at the beginning of the training year 1981, which was thus released from the training tasks at the same time . Initially, the theoretical training took place at Section 7 "Aviation Training / Pilot" at the University of Bautzen and the practical training in Briest. This division over two locations proved to be not very efficient, so that the head of the LSK / LV decided in 1982 to merge both parts. This was implemented at the beginning of the 1983 training year through the establishment of the independent Section 8 “Aviation Training / Helicopter Guide” in Briest. The HAS-35 also had two KTW Mi-8 flight simulators especially for Mi-8 training .

In 1984 the squadron was expanded to size and renamed Helicopter Training Wing 35 . The founding roll call was set for September 1st. Two days before the appointment, however, two Mi-2s with tactical numbers 351 and 384 collided in the air on August 30 and crashed; both pilots were killed. Thereupon the list was changed to October 1st.

The training to become a helicopter pilot took about 180 flight hours in the HAG-35, with the basic training being carried out on the Mi-2 and covering two years with about 70 hours. From the 3rd year of study, the students completed most of the lessons on the Wed-8. While at the beginning only officer students were admitted for training, from 1987 ensign students were also trained as weapon operators for the Mi-24.

1986 the OHS "Otto Lilienthal" was founded in Bautzen on November 24th as the second officers' college of the air force / air defense, to which the HAG-35 was subordinated to the hunting and transport units of the NVA. After the political events of 1989, the helicopter training squadron 35 was disbanded on October 2, 1990; the last flight service had taken place on September 25th.

Remarks

  1. The helicopter (serial number 56 3148 103) was delivered from the manufacturing plant in Świdnik in October 1973 and put into service with the HG-34 with tactical number 393 on November 20, 1973 . In November 1981 it was integrated into the HAG-35 as initial equipment and used there until it was dissolved. In January 1991 it was transferred to the Bundeswehr with the Kenner 94 + 63 and was flown from April of the same year by the Air Transport Group (LTGrp) Briest until December 1992. On June 22, 1994 it was handed over to the Museum Berlin-Gatow , where it can be viewed ever since.
