history

The TG-44 was set up in Marxwalde (today Neuhardenberg ) in 1957 as a government and liaison squadron. In 1962 it was renamed Independent Transport Air Force Squadron , and in 1965 Transport Air Air Force Squadron 29 (TFS-29). After an intermediate step in 1971 (the TFS-29 becomes the "Transportfliegergeschwader-44" - TFG-44), the association finally received its final name Transportfliegergeschwader 44 (TG-44) in 1973. The structure and tasks defined for the squadron in 1972:

At that time it was not planned to operate aircraft of the size class Il-62. Services for which this model would have been required should have been provided by Interflug.

On March 1, 1976, the association was given the traditional name "Arthur Pieck". From 1978 the introduction of type Il-62M aircraft began in the independent transport chain Il-62M as part of the TG-44. An IL-62 of the TG-44, for example, brought Erich Honecker to Cologne / Bonn Airport on his visit to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1987 .

With the dissolution of the NVA in 1990, the aircraft of the squadron were taken over by the German armed forces under the original designation, only to be partially handed over to the aviation readiness of the Federal Ministry of Defense and the Air Transport Squadron 65 and continued to operate. After that, TG 44 was dissolved.

organization

The TG-44 was directly subordinate to the LSK / LV command.

Remarks:

  • In Marxwalde, the Aviation Technical Battalion 44 was assigned to supply the aircraft with operating materials and spare parts, airfield maintenance and the supply of soldiers.
  • For frame structure see: Squadron, Air Force NVA
  • The squadron was finally divided into four squadrons (1st squadron: Tu-154 ; 2nd squadron: Tu-134A ; 3rd helicopter squadron: Mi-8S ; 4th season: IL-62M in Berlin-Schönefeld ).

Relations with Interflug

There were various interrelationships between the TG-44 and Interflug . The aircraft repair and maintenance of the IL-62M was carried out with recourse to the resources of Interflug. Extensive telecommunication facilities were also used jointly. In terms of training and further education for the flying crews, the squadron initially relied on Interflug in general. From 1978 the association was responsible for this itself. Interflug was only used to maintain the expertise to carry out international flights.

After the usage period had expired, the aircraft had to be handed over to the Ministry of Transport - and thus to Interflug - against reimbursement of their current value. Helicopters continued to be used in the NVA.
