Democratic Left , DL for short , is a small party that was founded in 1999 by former members of the SPD , Greens and PDS . Already in May 1999 she won a state parliament mandate in Berlin through the transfer of the Green MP Ida Schillen , who had left the party in protest against the war in Kosovo and was a member of parliament until November 1999. In the Berlin House of Representatives election in 1999, however, the DL received only 0.1% of the second vote.

In the Berlin district of Friedrichshain , several district councilors from the PDS, Greens and SPD had left their parliamentary groups and founded the Democratic Left List (DLL). In April 1999 the DLL became part of the DL in Friedrichshain.

Election results

In the election of the district assembly in 1999, DL in Friedrichshain achieved 0.5% and thus no mandates. In Kreuzberg the DL also reached 0.5%, in Prenzlauer Berg 0.3%, in Mitte and Tiergarten 0.2%, in the other districts between 0.0% and 0.1%.

In the 2001 parliamentary elections, DL entered Prenzlauer Berg with direct candidates . They received between 0.9% and 1.1% of the first votes. In 2006 and 2011, too, the DL presented direct candidates. In 2011 a direct candidate for the DL ran in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and achieved 0.3% of the votes in the constituency.

Name dispute

In June 2005 the party hit the headlines. As part of its cooperation with the WASG , the PDS considered renaming itself the “Democratic Left - PDS”. The Democratic Left considered filing a lawsuit against the use of this name, but rejected this when the PDS and WASG declared that they would not use this name.
