- Baikonur / Kazakhstan : A few minutes after take-off from the Roskosmos spaceport, the Progress MS-04 space freighter burns up .
- Banjul / Gambia : The authoritarian President and Prime Minister Yahya Jammeh ( APRC ), who has been in office since 1994, loses the presidential election after four terms in office. With 45.5% of the vote, the previously largely unknown opposition candidate Adama Barrow received the most support from the socialist UDP . Jammeh got 36.6% and former ruling party MP Mamma Kandeh got 17.8% of the vote.
- Berlin / Germany : The Wikileaks disclosure platform publishes 2,420 documents with a size of 90 gigabytes, which the NSA investigative committee of the German Bundestag received. - Sirte / Libya : During the civil war in Libya , the army , together with militia groups that support the ruling Alliance of National Forces , recaptured the port city of Sirte from the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS). This means that after four months the operation to take the IS “stronghold” in Libya ends.

- Banjul / Gambia : One week after his defeat in the presidential election, President Yahya Jammeh , who has been in office for 22 years, announced on television that he did not recognize the election result because of "unacceptable errors by the electoral commission".
- Košice / Slovakia : A major fire at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Pavol-Jozef-Šafárik University in Košice destroys the entire top floor and causes large parts of the roof to collapse.
- Madagali / Nigeria : Two schoolgirls commit suicide bombings in the city's market . At least 30 people are killed. A connection between the assassins and the Islamist organization Boko Haram is suspected.

- Wroclaw / Poland : At the European Film Awards , the film Toni Erdmann wins in five categories, including the competition for “Best Film”.
- Hitrino / Bulgaria : At least eight people died in the derailment and subsequent explosion of a freight train with gas tanks from Bulmarket. In the village in Shumen Oblast , at least 20 houses, including the station building and the town hall, are destroyed on the railway line between Burgas and Russe.

- Rome / Italy : After the resignation of the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi , the previous Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni ( PD ) is tasked with forming a government by President Sergio Mattarella .

- Kerak / Jordan : Four terrorists kill seven Jordanian police officers and three civilians, including a tourist from Canada, in Qatraneh and the Kerak crusader castle . 22 other people are injured. Special forces storm the castle, where all attackers are killed.

- Washington, DC / United States : The 538 electors elect the 45th President of the United States of America: Republican Donald Trump . There are two dissenters among the Republicans and four among the Democrats.
- Zurich / Switzerland : Three people are seriously injured in a shooting in a prayer room of the Somali-Islamic cultural center. The perpetrator, a 24-year-old Swiss with Ghanaian roots, committed suicide.

A total of around 100,000 soldiers and fighters are involved in the Battle of Mosul.

- New York / United States : The United Nations Security Council supports the ceasefire negotiated by Russia and Turkey for the civil war country Syria . UN resolution 2336 (2016) was passed unanimously. The peace plan drawn up by Russia and Turkey provides for the ceasefire that has been in force across the country since December 30, 2016, further peace talks in Astana in January 2017 and the formation of a transitional government. This does not apply to the continued fight against terrorist groups such as the Islamic State (IS) and the Al-Nusra Front .
- Rome / Italy : The Italian telecommunications company Wind Tre SpA was founded, which was a merger of the former autonomous companies H3G and Wind Telecomunicazioni . At the time of the merger, it was one of the largest corporate mergers in Italy since 2007. According to the company, it was Italy's largest telecommunications company, but also the country's third-largest mobile operator.
