Timika is a city in the Papua province in the Indonesian part of New Guinea with approx. 100,000 inhabitants and the capital of the Mimika region .

The city is in close proximity to the Lorentz National Park and the largest gold mine in the world, the Grasberg mine . The proximity of the mine and the rapid growth of the city pose a threat to the environment and the national park. Furthermore, the Indonesian military is strongly present in the region due to the activities of the Papua rebels of the Organasi Papua Merdeka .
