- Idlib / Syria : A Russian Mil Mi-8 transport helicopter is shot down by alleged fighters of the Al-Nusra Front on the return flight from Aleppo to the Hmeimim air base . Three crew members and two officers are killed.
- Kabul / Afghanistan : In an attack by the radical Islamist Taliban on the Northgate Hotel in the northeast of the city, which is occupied by employees of security and military companies , three attackers and a police officer are killed and at least three other police officers are injured.
- Sirte / Libya : At the request of the government of the national unity government (GNA) under Prime Minister Fayiz al-Sarradsch , based in Tobruk, the armed forces of the United States are carrying out air strikes against targets of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) in Sirte for the first time as part of Operation Odyssey Lightning .

- South Africa : From the municipal elections goes ANC emerged as the strongest force. His share of the vote falls from 61.9% in the last elections in 2011 to around 54%. In the metropolitan municipality of Nelson Mandela Bay with Port Elizabeth and in Pretoria , the Democratic Alliance (DA) surprisingly wins the most votes.

- Brasilia / Brazil : The House of Lords of the National Congress approved the initiation of proceedings for the impeachment of the suspended President Rousseff . The members of the House of Lords will decide by early September whether Rousseff will be removed from office.
- Brasilia / Brazil : The environmental authority IBAMA refuses the São Luiz do Tapajós hydropower plant on the Rio Tapajós the necessary environmental license, without which the project cannot be built. The indigenous group of the Munduruku and the environmental protection organization Greenpeace had jointly mobilized against the project planned by the government.

- Aleppo / Syria : The Islamist - Salafist rebel militias Ahrar al-Sham and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (formerly Al-Nusra Front ) report after three weeks of fighting that they have broken through the siege ring of the Syrian armed forces at a point in the southwest .
- Charleroi / Belgium : After shouting “ Allahu Akbar ”, a man attacks two policewomen in front of the main guard with a machete and injures them. The attacker is then shot down by a police officer and dies.
- Rouen / France : In a fire in the Au Cubra Libre bar , at least 13 people die and six others are injured at a private birthday party.
- Senkaku Islands / Japan : Japan submits a protest note to the Chinese embassy in Tokyo and demands the immediate withdrawal of around 230 fishing boats and six ships of the Chinese coast guard from the waters around the Senkaku Islands. The five uninhabited islands and three rocky reefs are claimed by China and Taiwan and are under Japanese administration.
- Skopje / Macedonia : At least 20 people die and 22 others are injured in heavy rains and floods.

- Bangkok / Thailand : Thai voters vote in a referendum for the new constitution presented by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) under General Prayut Chan-o-cha .
- Bonn / Germany : The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is excluding the entire Russian team from the upcoming Paralympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro as a result of the McLaren report .
- Istanbul / Turkey : Several 100,000 people gather for a rally against the coup attempt on July 15 and 16 at the invitation of the Turkish President , Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , on Yenikapı Square in the Fatih district . In addition to numerous supporters of the ruling AKP , opposition leaders Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu from the CHP and Devlet Bahçeli from the MHP also take part in the event. The HDP party was not invited.
- Marseille / France : In the morning, two men were shot dead by four unknown perpetrators with Kalashnikov assault rifles in the 4th arrondissement . The police assume a crime in the drug milieu.

- Quetta / Pakistan : At least 73 people die and another 200 are injured in a bomb attack on a hospital in the capital of the Pakistani province of Balochistan . The terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan are committed to the attack.

- Dangyang / China : In the event of an explosion in a coal-fired power station owned by Madian Gangue Power Generation Co. Ltd. 21 people die, five more are injured. The cause of the explosion is a burst high pressure steam line.
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The European Central Bank (ECB) does not impose any conditions on the takeover of the German private bank Hauck & Aufhäuser by the Chinese conglomerate Fosun , based in Shanghai .
- Gmund am Tegernsee / Germany : For the first time, a German bank decides to pay negative interest on deposits on overnight money and current accounts . Holdings of more than 100,000 euros at Raiffeisenbank Gmund am Tegernsee eG are affected . The glut of savings that has hindered the financial and goods market so far has now reached German current account transactions for private customers.
- Hua Hin / Thailand : In the tourist town of Hua Hin in the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan, two explosions occur at a street crossing, at least one person is killed. In this and similar events in other places in Thailand, a total of four people were killed and at least 22 others injured.
- Moscow / Russia : Russian President Vladimir Putin accuses Ukraine of terrorism. The domestic intelligence service FSB explains that Ukrainian saboteurs killed a Russian soldier and an FSB employee in northern Crimea on July 7 and 8, 2016 .
- Kiev / Ukraine : President Petro Poroshenko puts the Ukrainian armed forces on the borders to the Russian- annexed Crimea and to the Oblasts of Donetsk and Luhansk, which are partly controlled by pro-Russian separatists .
- Copenhagen / Denmark : A research team led by Julius Nielsen from the University of Copenhagen identifies the Greenland Shark as the world's longest-lived vertebrate .
- Lusaka / Zambia : The incumbent President Edgar Lungu from the Patriotic Front will be re-elected. He has around 100,000 more votes than Hakainde Hichilema ( UPND ), who is running for the fourth time to elect the head of state.

- Bangkok / Thailand : After the explosion of explosives in Hua Hin the day before, a series of eight bomb attacks followed . The cities of Phuket , Phang-nga , Surat Thani and Trang are affected . At least four people die and more than 30 are injured.
- New York / United States : The United Nations Security Council adopts a resolution tabled by the United States for a Regional Protection Force comprising 4,000 blue helmet soldiers in Juba in South Sudan as part of the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) by 15. December 2016.
- Parañaque City / Philippines : Ten inmates are killed in a grenade explosion in a detention center and the director of the detention center, Gerald Bantag, is seriously injured. The Department for Prison Administration and Criminal Law (BJMP) considers an escape attempt to be possible.
- Taipei / China : The Chinese competition authority (Fair Trade Commission) has approved the takeover of the Japanese electronics company Sharp by Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd.). Foxconn then pays 388 billion yen (3.4 billion euros) for a 66% stake in Sharp.
- La Palma / Spain : A forest fire on the Spanish island in the Atlantic is brought under control after nine days. The fire destroyed 50 km² of forest, and a forest worker was killed while fighting the fire. The forest fire was caused by a 27-year-old German dropout who said he wanted to burn his toilet paper.

- Pathein / Myanmar : Due to monsoon rains that have been going on for weeks, at least three people have died from flooding and around 430,000 people have left their homes in northern and central Myanmar. The Irrawaddy region is also badly affected .
- Sa'da / Yemen : According to the aid organization Doctors Without Borders, 19 people, including at least ten children, died in an air strike by the Royal Saudi Air Force on a school in a town in the Razih district .
- Sennwald / Switzerland : A 27-year-old Swiss man, armed with a knife and a flammable liquid, attacks several passengers on a train on the Südostbahn on the section between Buchs and Salez . On the same day, an attacked person and the perpetrator succumb to their injuries. Five other people are seriously injured, one of whom will die on August 31. So far there are no signs of a terrorist or political motive.
- Beni / DR Congo : In an attack by the Uganda- based Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an organization of the Islamist Tablighi Jamaat , at least 40 people are killed with guns and machetes in the suburb of Rwangoma in the province of North Kivu .
- Monroe / United States : Four people are killed in floods in Louisiana .

- Atmeh / Syria : According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 32 people and another 50 died in a suicide attack on a bus that smuggled fighters from the Faylaq Al-Sham and Harakat Nour al-Din al-Zenki from Turkey into the Idlib province get hurt. The terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) is committed to the attack.
- Bismil / Turkey : A car bomb attack on a traffic police building on the D-370 highway near Bismil in the Diyarbakır province kills five police officers and two other people and injures 20 others. According to Turkish information, the order was given to the perpetrators by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
- Arequipa / Peru : An earthquake measuring 5.3 M w kills at least nine and injures more than 40 people. The region was hit by an earthquake as early as 2001.

- Beni / DR Congo : Three people die in a demonstration against the government. The crowd gathered to protest against the years of massacre carried out by the Ugandan Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) . The last of these mass murders had killed around 50 people four days earlier.
- Berlin / Germany : A spokesman for the Federal Ministry of Defense announces another delivery of weapons to the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters in Erbil in northern Iraq in the fight against the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS). A total of 70 tons of armaments, including 1,500 HK G36 assault rifles , 100 anti-tank guided missiles of the Milan type and three armored vehicles of the Dingo 1 type , were delivered.

In the late evening hours, the building of the National Assembly was set on fire, a little later security forces stormed the headquarters of the opposition candidate Jean Ping .
- Phoenix / United States : In a speech on immigration , the Republican Party candidate for the election of 45th US President on November 8, 2016 , Donald Trump , announced: “We will build a great wall along the southern border (note: the USA ) build. And Mexico will pay for the wall. One hundred percent."
- Iwate Prefecture / Japan : When Typhoon Lionrock hits the coasts of Hokkaidō and North Honshū , at least eleven people are killed in the ensuing floods . Most of the victims (nine) are recovered in Iwaizumi, Iwate.
