On April 14, 2016, five suspects were arrested in a nationwide raid. Four kilograms of heroin, 54 kilograms of amphetamine, 1.3 kilograms of cocaine and 25,000 ecstasy tablets were confiscated from them.

- Chan Yunis / Palestinian Autonomous Territories : The destruction of tunnels that lead under the border installations from the Gaza Strip to Israel triggered direct skirmishes between the Israeli armed forces and the Qassam brigades of the Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas for the first time since the Gaza conflict in 2014 .
- Homs / Syria : The terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) has again conquered large parts of the Schaar gas field east of Homs after heavy fighting.

- Belfast / United Kingdom : In the Northern Ireland Assembly elections , the unionist Democratic Unionist Party remains the strongest force with a 5.2% advantage over the Republican party Sinn Féin .
- Brasilia / Brazil : The Supremo Tribunal Federal (Supreme Federal Court) orders the revocation of the mandate of Parliament President Eduardo Cunha . Cunha had abused his office to thwart the investigation into his involvement in the Petrobras corruption scandal.

- Istanbul / Turkey : A first verdict is announced in the Cumhuriyet trial . Cumhuriyet's editor-in-chief , Can Dündar, and head of the newspaper's capital city office, Erdem Gül, are found guilty of disclosing state secrets and sentenced to five years in prison. Before the verdict was announced, an assassin shot at Dündar outside the court, missed him and injured a journalist who was present with a grazing shot.
- Nawzad / Afghanistan : The Afghan anti-terrorist unit Ktah Khas (KKA) (Afghan Special Unit), with the support of other commandos and the NATO mission Resolute Support, after heavy fighting, has around 60 people from a prison of the Deobandic - Islamist Taliban in the province of Helmand freed. Two Taliban fighters were killed in the process.
- Pyongyang / North Korea : For the first time since October 1980, a congress of the dominant Labor Party of Korea (PdAK) is being held under Kim Jong-un .
- Trani / Italy : According to the ANSA news agency, the public prosecutor in Trani is investigating the suspicion that Deutsche Bank was supposed to have misinformed the public and customers in 2011 about the intrinsic value of Italian government bonds . At this point in time, Deutsche Bank sold government bonds worth over eight billion euros and led to a crisis of confidence in the market. The investigation will be conducted against the then board members Josef Ackermann , Anshu Jain and Jürgen Fitschen .

- Athens / Greece : For the second day in a row, a general strike called by the trade unions leads to massive traffic restrictions. Most of the ferries in the Aegean Sea and the railways were on strike. Local transport collapsed in the capital and other cities. The protests are directed against an austerity package with pension cuts and tax increases by the government under Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras .
- Fort McMurray / Canada : The forest fires in the province of Alberta, which have been going on for over a week, are spreading. Around 1,100 firefighters are on duty. A total of 88,000 people could be evacuated. Around 2,000 houses have been destroyed so far in Fort McMurray.

- Manila / Philippines : In the presidential election , after counting around 89% of the polling stations, the mayor of Davao City , Rodrigo Duterte, is certain to be the winner. In the vice presidential election there will be a head-to-head race between Maria Leonor Robredo and Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
- Washington, DC / United States : The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) has published a database of raw data on around 214,000 offshore companies from the Panama Papers . Almost 400 journalists around the world were involved in researching the leak of over eleven million documents.
- Vienna / Austria : The Austrian Chancellor and Chairman of the SPÖ , Werner Faymann , announces his resignation from all offices with immediate effect. Following the resignation of Faymann, Reinhold Mitterlehner (ÖVP) was entrusted by Federal President Heinz Fischer with the "continuation of the administration" on the same day.

- Beijing / China : The People's Republic of China refuses entry to the Chairman of the Human Rights Committee of the German Bundestag Michael Brand ( CDU ) as head of the delegation, because he has been critical of human rights violations in China on various occasions and is involved in the activities of the Tibet Initiative Deutschland e.V. V. (TID) in Frankfurt am Main.

- Taji / Iraq : Suicide bombers from the terrorist organization Islamic State attack the gas-fired power plant built in 2012 by URUK Engineering & Contracting Co. At least 11 people are killed and 22 others injured.

- Aden / Yemen : According to a hospital, at least 45 people die and 30 others are injured in two suicide attacks by the Islamic State (IS) in front of an army barracks in the Khormaksar district and in front of a commander's house.
- Jabla / Syria : In several terrorist attacks by the Islamic State (IS) in Jabla and Tartus , at least 153 people were killed and more than 200 injured in seven explosions, two car bombs and five suicide bombings, according to SOHR . The Syrian news agency SANA initially reported at least 78 deaths.
- Écully / France : The French household appliance manufacturer SEB is taking over the German manufacturer of household, catering and hotel goods, WMF Group , based in Geislingen an der Steige , for 1.6 billion euros . The competition authorities have yet to approve the takeover.
- Fallujah / Iraq : The Iraqi armed forces start another offensive to recapture the city from the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS).
