Kashiko-jima ( Japanese 賢 島 ) is a Japanese island in Ago Bay in Shima municipality .

geography

Kashiko-jima is located in the east of Ago Bay, a narrow, deeply indented and furrowed bay ( ria ) on the Shima Peninsula . At 0.66 km², it is the largest of the approximately 60 islands and islets in the bay.

Kashiko-jima belonged to the city ( chō ) Ago which was incorporated into Shima in 2004 and is now part of the Agochō-Shinmei district. It is connected to the peninsula by two bridges: in the north with the 153 m long Kashiko-ōhashi ( 賢 島 大橋 ) and in the east via the 20 m crossing Kashiko-hashi ( 賢 島 橋 ) with the national road 167 and the Kintetsu Shima railway line .

In 2000 there were 217 people on the island.

The name of the island probably refers to the fact that you could cross the island on foot at low tide because of its short distance from the coast, which is why it is said to have been referred to as kachikoe-yama ( か ち こ え 山 ), which then becomes Kashiko-yama ( か し こ 山 ) or Kashiko-jima blended - yama means “mountain” and jima “island”. Your current spelling with the character for "clever, wise" comes from the early Shōwa period (1926–1989).

history

In 1946 the Ise Shima National Park was established, and the Ago Bay with Kashiko-jima also belongs. This also led to the fact that in 1951 the Kintetsu railway company opened the Shima Kankō Hotel ( 志摩 観 光 ホ テ ル ) here, which was the first resort hotel after the war. Emperor Hirohito also stayed here several times and wrote poems about Kashiko-jima, which increased its popularity nationwide. When it was expanded to 200 rooms in 1969, it was also the largest hotel in Japan. In 1970, Kintetsu opened the Shima Marineland marine aquarium ( 志摩 マ リ ン ラ ン ド , Shima Marinrando ).

With its good transport links and the port in the south of the island, it is the starting point for tourism in Ago Bay and the Shima Peninsula.

Prime Minister Shinzō Abe selected the island as the venue for the 2016 G7 Summit , which was held at the Shima Kankō Hotel.
