Kinnaur ( Hindi : किन्नौर Kinnaur [ kɪnˈnɔːr ]) is one of the twelve districts of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh . It lies on the border with the Tibet Autonomous Region ( People's Republic of China ) in the Himalayas . The capital is Rekong Peo .
geography
Kinnaur is consistently high, between over 1200 meters at the level of the valley floors and with mountain peaks over 6000 meters. One of the highest mountains is the Hindu and Buddhist holy Kinnaur Kailash (6050 meters). The 5550 m high Manirang lies on the border with Lahaul and Spiti .
Administrative division
The district is divided into 3 administrative areas (Pooh, Kalpa and Nichar) and 5 Tehsils (Kalpa, Moorang, Nichar, Pooh, Sangla).
population
In terms of culture and ethnology, the region is a mixture of Tibetan and Indo-Aryan influences. Significant temples of an autochthonous mountain religion integrated into Hinduism in the lower Kinnaur (Sungra, Nichar and others, also Sanglatal and Chini), thousand-year-old Buddhist monasteries in the uppermost Kinnaur (Kanum, Nako, Charang).
The total population of 84,121 inhabitants (2011 census) is relatively small compared to other Indian districts. The inhabitants of Kinnaur live almost exclusively in small settlements above the steep Satluj valley and in side valleys. Economically, agriculture dominates (fruit growing, forestry), tourism is developing.
