The Shimla District ( Hindi : ज़िला शिमला ) is a district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh . The seat of the district administration is Shimla - also the capital of Himachal Pradesh.
geography
The Shimla district is located in the east of Himachal Pradesh south of the main Himalayan ridge. Neighboring districts are Kinnaur in the northeast, Kullu in the north, Mandi in the west, Solan in the southwest and Sirmaur in the south. In the east the district borders on Uttarakhand . In the northwest, the Sutlej forms the district boundary . The east is drained from the Tons and Giri rivers to the Yamuna . The area of the Shimla district is 5131 km².

According to the 2011 census, the Shimla district has 814,010 inhabitants. The population density is 159 people per square kilometer, above the state average. The largest city is Shimla with 171,817 inhabitants (as of 2011, urban agglomeration).
history
The princely state of Bashahr extended over the area of today's district until 1956.
