The district of Kangra ( Hindi : काँगड़ा जिला ) is a district of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh . The seat of the district administration is Dharmshala , the district is named after the city of Kangra .
geography
The Kangra district is located in western Himachal Pradesh at the foothills of the Himalayas and is flanked by the Dhauladhar Mountains. Neighboring districts are Chamba in the north, an Kullu in the east, Mandi in the southeast and Hamirpur and Una in the south. In the southwest, the Kangra district borders the state of Punjab and in the northwest with Jammu and Kashmir . The area of the Kangra District is 5739 square kilometers.
The terrain is hilly. In addition to the cultivation of grain and livestock, tea cultivation dominates.
Administrative division
The district is divided into 8 sub-divisions (Kangra, Palampur, Dharamshala, Nurpur, Dehra Gopipur, Baijnath, Jwali and Jaisinghpur), 16 Tehsils (Nurpur, Nagrota, Indora, Jwali, Kangra, Palampur, Badoh, Kasba Kotla, Jaswan, Dehra Gopipur, Khundiyan, Jaisinghpur, Baijnath, Fatehpur, Dharamshala and Shahpur) and 8 Sub-Tehsils (Harchakkian, Dhira, Rakkad, Thural, Nagrota Surian, Kotla, Gangath and Multhan).

According to the 2011 census, the Kangra district has 1,510,075 inhabitants. This makes it the most populous district of Himachal Pradesh. The population density is 263 people per square kilometer, above the state average. The indigenous people of the Kangri live in the Kangra district . The majority of the population is Hindu , with the proportion of Buddhists steadily increasing due to the immigration of Tibetans.
economy
The main branch of the economy is agriculture (fields and livestock farming). Also is here Kangra tea grown. The Gaddis are still important today , the traditional shepherds from the Kangra district who drive their sheep and goat herds over the high Himalayan passes to the summer pastures in Lahaul and in the Zanskar / Spiti / Ladakh border area, while their wives continue to work in the fields farm at home.
