Mukalla ( Arabic المكلا al-Mukallā ) is the largest city in the eastern region of Hadramaut in Yemen and has over 222,000 inhabitants.
history
Mukalla is located on the Indian Ocean and has been the most important seaport for this region since ancient times . He is already on the map of Ptolemy recorded from the 2nd century. The white harbor front led to the equation of the pearl of Arabia.
The oldest settlement core is on a peninsula. The port developed around them. From the second half of the 19th century until it was incorporated into the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen in 1967, it belonged to the Sultanate of Shihr and Mukalla . Indian influences can be seen in the trading houses that were built at the time of the British Protectorate, such as the palace of the Qu'ayti sultans . With the departure of the British in the 1960s, the city expanded inland. Urban development has increased rapidly with oil production since the 1990s and led to a construction boom.
