Philibert Tsiranana (born October 28, 1912 in Ambarikorano , † April 16, 1978 ) was President of Madagascar from 1960 to 1972 .

Life

Philibert Tsiranana obtained his school diploma ( brevet des collèges ) at the regional school in Analalava and then studied in Antananarivo . From 1942 to 1945 he trained as a teacher; In 1946 he received a scholarship to study at the École normal d'instituteurs in Montpellier . In 1946 he founded the Parti des déshérités de Madagascar , which in 1956 became the Parti social démocrate . It consisted mainly of coastal residents ( côtiers ) who were supposed to counterbalance the Merina in the central highlands, and, like the PADESM, met with the benevolent approval of the colonial power France . From 1956 to 1959 Tsiranana was a member of the French National Assembly (Assemblée nationale).

In 1959 he ran successfully against Norbert Zafimahova for the office of president. Tsiranana's government was in continuity with the policies of the French settlers (or “colonists”) who were still in positions of power and, unlike many former French colonies, took an anti-communist course. In 1972 protests against this policy flared up and Tsiranana was overthrown. He handed power to General Gabriel Ramanantsoa and his Provisional Government in 1972 . After his dismissal, he founded the Parti socialiste malgache in 1974 .

Philibert Tsiranana was married to Justine Tsiranana, who was six years her junior .
