Ratsirahonana was Prime Minister of Madagascar from May 28, 1996 to February 21, 1997 and President of the State from September 5, 1996 to February 9, 1997, as incumbent President Albert Zafy was dismissed from office for repeated violations of the constitution and exceeding his powers. He resigned in 2006 and announced his participation in the December 2006 presidential election in August 2006. There he reached fifth place with 4.22% of the vote.
