Joel Rakotomalala

Joel (Joël) Rakotomalala (born March 29, 1929 in Tanandrana , Toliara Province , † July 30, 1976 in Antsirabe ) was a Malagasy politician .

biography

After attending school, he joined the armed forces and initially trained as an officer at the officer school for officer cadets of the French overseas territories from 1957 to 1959 , before he attended the infantry school in Saint-Maixent-l'École between 1959 and 1960 . After attending the Montargis News School , he graduated from the Academy for Staff Officers and graduated with a diploma.

When, after the economic and domestic political problems of the government of President Philibert Tsiranana that began in the 1960s and which were partly linked to tribal laws , the first strikes against the government in the early 1970s , he was one of the officers who opposed turned to the President. As a major , he was promoted to Minister of Information in the government of Prime Minister General Gabriel Ramanantsoa in May 1972 and, as such, to lieutenant colonel in January 1973 . After his resignation in January 1975, he became a member of the transitional government of the previous interior minister, Colonel Richard Ratsimandrava, and the chairman of the military leadership committee, Gilles Andriamahazo .

After the coup d'état by Admiral Didier Ratsiraka in 1975, which led to the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Madagascar on December 30, 1975, Rakotomalala became Prime Minister of Madagascar on January 11, 1976 . Justin Rakotoniaina succeeded Prime Minister after his death in a helicopter crash on July 30, 1976 .
