Rivo Rakotovao

Rivo Rakotovao (born May 12, 1960 ) is a Malagasy politician who became President of Madagascar on September 7, 2018 . He took over this office from Hery Rajaonarimampianina , who according to the constitution had to resign on September 7, 2018 in order to be able to participate again in the presidential elections on November 7, 2018 .

Life & Career

Rakotovao, who was born on May 12, 1960, belonged to the inner circle of later President Hery Rajaonarimampianina at a political level . When he became Minister of Finance and Budget in his home country, Rakotovao was already acting as a technical advisor. Then Rakotovao was a constant companion in Rajaonarimampianina's entourage, became his special advisor and subsequently himself Minister for Spatial Planning, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, and Senator. On November 12, 2017, he took over the presidency of the Malagasy Senate and is currently still active in this role (as of December 25, 2018). For a few weeks he also acted as chairman of the presidential party Hery Vaovao ho an'i Madagasikara (HVM). After Rajaonarimampianina had to constitutionally resign from his office as President of Madagascar on September 7, 2018 in order to be able to participate again in the presidential elections on November 7, 2018 , the President of the Senate took over his office and became President ad interim . As transitional president, he is active with limited power until he took office on January 19, 2019 by Andry Rajoelina, who was newly elected in the 2018 elections in Madagascar .
