The 2013 presidential election campaign

Rajaonarimampianina founded the political movement Hery Vaovao hoan'i Madagasikara ((HVM), German New Forces for Madagascar) in 2013 and stood with another 32 candidates in the first round of the presidential elections on October 25, 2013. Its main competitors were the mayor of Antananarivo Edgard Marie Noé Razafindravahy from the Tanora Gasy Vonona (TGV) party of the interim president Rajoelina, the candidate of the movement of the former president Marc Ravalomanana , Jean-Louis Robinson from the Antoko ny Vahoaka Aloha No Andrianina party (AVANA) and the two former prime ministers of the “High Transitional AuthorityAlbert Camille Vital and Roindefo Zafitsimivalo Monja .

After the first round, Rajaonarimampianina reached 15.62% of the vote and was second behind Robinson. All candidates who were close to the “High Transitional Authority”, which came to power in 2009, achieved a combined 55%.

Before the second ballot on December 20, he won the support of other political groups, including the political parties of Roland Ratsiraka, a nephew of former President Didier Ratsiraka , and Pierrot Rajaonarivelo, and incumbent interim president Andry Rajoelina.

Rajaonarimampianina won the second round of the presidential elections with 53.5%. Despite some complaints from Robinson's supporters about election fraud, international election observers declared the elections overall as "free, transparent, credible and correct".
