Hadramaut ( Arabic حضرموت, DMG Ḥaḍramawt ) is one of the 21 governorates of Yemen . It is in the northeast of the country.
Hadramaut has an area of 191,737 km² and about 1,263,754 inhabitants. This results in a population density of 6.6 inhabitants per km².
Hadramaut borders in the southwest on Shabwa , in the west on Ma'rib and al-Jauf , in the north on Saudi Arabia , in the east at one point on Oman , in the southeast on al-Mahra and in the south on the Indian Ocean .
Administrative divisions and cities
The Hadramaut Governorate is divided into 30 districts.
In addition to the capital al-Mukalla , the Hadramaut governorate includes the cities of Saiy'ūn , Tarim , asch-Schihr and Schibam .
history
In 2004 the Socotra archipelago , which was previously part of Adan, was incorporated into Hadramaut.
In 2013, a separate governorate of Socotra was created with the two districts of Hidaybu and Qulensya Wa Abd Al Kuri . This leaves 28 of the previously 30 districts in Hadramaut Governorate.
