Adan ( Arabic عدن ʿAdan , in German also Aden ) is one of the 21 governorates of Yemen . It is in the south of the country.
Adan has an area of 1,114 km² and approx. 764,342 inhabitants. This results in a population density of 686.1 inhabitants per km².
Until 2004, the Socotra archipelago was part of the Adan Governorate, then it was annexed to the Hadramaut Governorate , and has been a separate Socotra Governorate since December 2013 .
The island of Perim still belongs to the Adan Governorate, namely to the al-Muʿalla district . This means that the parts of the Mualla district are 170 kilometers apart, and the parts of the governorate are still around 80 kilometers.
