Asch-Schihr (or aš-Šich̨r , ash-Shihr ), ( Arabic الشحر, DMG aš-Šiḥr ) is a coastal town in Hadramaut , which is located in southern Yemen , south-east of Sanaa . From the second half of the 19th century until it was incorporated into the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen in 1967, it belonged to the Sultanate of Shihr and Mukalla .
An oil terminal was opened nearby on August 5, 1993, from which “ Yemen Masila Blend ” oil is shipped. The oil is pumped from the Masila Block oil field to the port via a 138 km long pipeline . The oil field and the oil loading station are operated by the Canadian company Nexen .
On October 10, 2002, a suicide bombing attributed to al-Qaeda in Yemen occurred in the port of the city when the French oil tanker Limburg was attacked. In addition to one death, twelve were injured and 90,000 barrels of oil were lost.
