Nexen is a Canadian company headquartered in Calgary .

In 1971 the company was founded under the name Canadian Occidental Petroleum . 80 percent of the company initially belonged to the US energy company Occidental Petroleum . Occidental Petroleum does not currently own any shares in Nexen. Nexen produces natural gas and oil in Canada , the Gulf of Mexico , Colombia , Yemen, as well as in the North Sea and off the West African coast.

In July 2012, the Chinese company CNOOC announced that it would buy Nexen. The takeover has yet to be approved by the authorities in Canada, China and the USA. After months of hesitation, on December 7th, 2012, the Canadian government announced to Harper that it had "exceptionally" approved the sale of Nexen to the Chinese state-owned company.
