  • Brussels / Belgium : EU Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos gives the Greek government a two-month ultimatum to protect the external border of the European Union . According to Avramopoulos, the EU Commission will be presented with a balance sheet on May 12, 2016, in which the border protection of the external borders by Greece will be assessed.
  • Istanbul / Turkey : Turkish police forces storm the editorial building of the government-critical daily Zaman after an Istanbul court has appointed the Turkish state as its trustee. The editor-in-chief Abdülhamit Bilici is dismissed. The European Union and the United States criticize the procedure and demand that the freedom of the press, as enshrined in the country's constitution, be respected .
  • Zurich / Switzerland : The Swiss National Bank (SNB) announces a record loss of 23.3 billion francs (21.5 billion euros) for 2015 .   • Hajjah / Yemen : At least 41 people are killed and 75 others injured in Saudi air strikes as part of Operation Restoring Hope . A market in Mustaba district in Hajjah governorate is also hit .
  • Moscow / Russia : The Russian armed forces in Syria begin with the partial withdrawal of the troops with several fighter planes announced the day before by President Vladimir Putin . However, Russia wants to continue the fight against terrorism. The Tartus naval base, which is located in a civil war country, and the Hmeimim military airfield are also to continue to be used. Since September 2015, Russia has been participating in the Syrian conflict alongside Syrian President Bashar al-Assad , mainly with air strikes against the Islamic State (IS) and other opposition groups .
  • Puyo / Ecuador : During a military exercise in the Pastaza province , an Arava- type transport plane crashes in the jungle. 19 paratroopers, both pilots and a mechanic, died.
