Garoowe (alternative spellings: Garōwe , Garowe , Gaarowe , Garoe ) is the capital of Puntland , a de facto autonomous region of Somalia . This is where the regional parliament, the presidential palace and the respective ministries are located. Garoowe is also the capital of the Nugaal region .

Garoowe has about 50,000 inhabitants and is the fifth largest city in the region after Boosaaso , Gaalkacyo , Goldogob and Laascaanood . The most important clans in Garoowe are the Isse Mahamud , a sub-clan of the Majeerteen, followed by the Mahamed Adan , a sub-clan of the Leelkase. Both belong to the Darod clan. The city is located in the geographical center of Puntland and lies on one of the major Somali north-south trunk roads. This ensured the rapid development of a country town into a regional metropolis.
