Laschkar Gah ( Pashtun لښکرګاه, Persian لشکرگاه, DMG Laškar-Gāh , ' Heerlager '), historical name Bost , is the capital of the southern Afghan province of Helmand and the name of the surrounding district.

Location and connection

The city is located at an altitude of 773  m . The district has around 200,000 inhabitants (as of 2006), making it one of the largest in the Helmand province. Laschkar Gah lies between the Helmand and Arghandab rivers . It is connected by highways with the cities of Kandahar to the east, Saranj to the west and Herat to the northwest. From Bost Airport , which is on the eastern side of the Helmand River, domestic airlines Ariana Afghan Airlines and Pamir Airways have connections to other Afghan cities.

During the war in Afghanistan, Laschkar Gah was the target of the Taliban, who succeeded in infiltrating the city in 2016 and threatening the access routes. Reinforcements of the Afghan national army were also attacked. Around 100 soldiers and police officers were killed in one battle in October 2016.

The Taliban's offensive on Laschkar Gah was reported at the end of July / beginning of August 2021.
