Supreme Court and Cassation Court

The Supreme Court and Cassation Court (Romanian Înalta Curte de Casație și Justiție ) is the highest court of the ordinary jurisdiction of Romania . It is based in the capital Bucharest .

The court has four chambers:

  • Civil Chamber I.
  • Civil Chamber II
  • Criminal chamber
  • Chamber for Administrative and Tax Matters

In addition, four five-member colleges of judges, the united chambers, the college for appeals in the interests of the law and the college for clarifying certain legal matters have been set up as arbors.

Procedure

The four chambers decide on revisions to the 15 Romanian courts of appeal. In addition, the criminal chamber is the first instance of criminal offenses by highlighted groups of people, such as members of parliament, members of the government, generals, judges at the constitutional court , etc.

In the Paris Convention of 1858 it was determined that a Supreme Court and Cassation Court with its seat in Focșani should be set up for the principalities of Wallachia and Moldova . In 1861, Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza passed a corresponding law. In 1862 the court in Bucharest began its work. Over the decades the name and responsibilities of the court have changed several times. The court has had its current name since 2003.
