Babak Morteza Sandschani ( Persian بابک مرتضی زنجانی; * March 21, 1974 in Tehran ) is an Iranian multi billionaire and entrepreneur . He claims he has a fortune of about ten billion dollars. Sanjani was arrested in 2013 on charges of corruption in Iran, tried and sentenced to death in 2016.

Life and Entanglements with Turkey

Sandschani studied at the Aegean University in the Turkish port city of Izmir . As a businessman, he acquired Qeshm Airlines on Qeschm Island and the Rah Ahan football club . Sandschani is the owner of the Sorinet group of companies .

Sandschani rejected reports in 2013 that he had a Danish passport. He had never been to Denmark, the passport was a - also badly made - forgery.

During the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from 2005 to 2013, Sandjani secretly sold Iranian oil and embezzled the billions in proceeds. Business was conducted through companies in Turkey, Malaysia , the United Arab Emirates and the People's Republic of China . In Turkey, he circumvented the EU's sanctions list against Iran by smuggling gold from Ghana to the Erdogan government . He conducted the business through his subordinate Resa Sarrab , who is known in Turkey as the spouse of Ebru Gündeş . He embezzled funds from the Iranian national oil company (NIOC).

Charges such as those against Sandschani were finally dismissed by the Turkish courts. Sandjani has been detained in Iran since December 30, 2013. On March 6, 2016, he was sentenced to death in the first instance by the 15th Chamber of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran for “depravity on earth” , as announced by Attorney General Gholamhossein Mohseni-Esche'i . Sandschani denies the corruption allegations and states that the forwarding of the money was not possible because of the sanctions. In addition to the death penalty, Sanjani and two of his employees were sentenced to repay the damage plus a quarter of the amount.

Sandschani's airline Qeshm Airlines was confiscated in January 2015.
