Salah Abdeslam ( Arabic صلاح عبد السلام, DMG Ṣalāḥ ʿAbd as-Salām ; * September 15, 1989 in Brussels , Belgium ) is an Islamist French terrorist of Moroccan descent who is considered one of the prime suspects in the terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015 in Paris . A total of 130 people were murdered in the coordinated attacks. The terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the worst series of attacks in French history . Abdeslam was known to the police for drug offenses . After the attacks in Paris, he was wanted by international arrest warrant . He was caught on March 18, 2016 in the Brussels municipality of Molenbeek . On April 27, 2016, he was extradited from Belgium to France . In a police raid three days before his arrest, he was one of three terrorist suspects who shot at the police, for which he was sentenced to 20 years in prison on April 23, 2018 in Brussels for attempted terrorist murder. The actual terror process follows later in Paris.

Life

Salah Abdeslam's family comes from Morocco . His father was born in 1949 in Oran in what was then French Algeria and lived for a while in the Paris suburb of Aubervilliers . This gave him French citizenship , which his wife and five children also acquired. The family has lived in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean / Sint-Jans-Molenbeek , a municipality in the Brussels-Capital Region , which is known as the “Islamist stronghold”, since the 1960s . Salah has two brothers, Ibrahim and Mohamed. Abdeslam had been friends with Abdelhamid Abaaoud , who would later be alleged to have planned the attacks in Paris , since childhood . He lost his job as a mechanic at STIB / MIVB , where he worked from September 2009 to 2011, due to frequent absences. In 2010 and 2011 he is said to have committed various crimes together with Abdelhamid Abaaoud in the Belgian capital, Brussels .

After his older brother Ibrahim Abdeslam (* 1984) took over the management of a bar in Molenbeek in March 2013, Salah joined the bar in December 2013 as a licensee , which was mainly frequented by migrants from the Maghreb and their descendants . In November 2015, authorities closed the place because visitors were using illegal hallucinogenic substances .

On October 29, 2015, Belgian authorities reported Salah Abdeslam and his brother Ibrahim to the international police authority Interpol , the Schengen Information System and the EU police authority Europol as potential jihad fighters ( threats ). Ibrahim Abdeslam was one of the perpetrators of the November 13, 2015 attacks in Paris; He lit the explosives vest on his body in a café (details here ).

Attacks on November 13, 2015

Salah Abdeslam is said to have rented the black VW Polo in Belgium , which was seen in front of the Bataclan concert hall during the terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015 in Paris , in which several assassins killed at least 89 people. He is also said to have driven the assassins at the Stade de France to the crime scene in a Renault Clio . On November 14, 2015, Salah Abdeslam and two other men were checked by the police in Cambrai in northern France as part of the tightened border controls. At the time of the vehicle inspection, his name was not noticed during the inspection. The investigators only brought him into connection with the attacks later and on November 15, 2015, he was listed for an international search.

Arrest and interrogation

On March 15, 2016, police found Salah Abdeslam's hiding place in the Forest / Vorst municipality in Brussels . During the raid, there was an exchange of fire in which three officers were injured. A suspect, the 35-year-old Algerian Mohamed Belkaïd, died. Three days later, Abdeslam was arrested in the Brussels district of Molenbeek, just 300 meters from his parents' home, after escaping for 126 days. He himself was slightly injured in the leg and was temporarily admitted to a clinic. Investigators arrested a total of five suspects, including a family with whom Salah Abdeslam was hiding. The family denied knowing anything about the attacks.

During his interrogation, Abdeslam named Abdelhamid Abaaoud as the planner of the attacks . He himself rented the hotel rooms and vehicles on behalf of his brother and drove the suicide bombers to the stadium. He threw away his own explosives belt. Mohamed Amri and Hamza Attou, who were later arrested, then brought him to Belgium. On March 20, 2016, investigators announced that he had apparently planned further attacks. In addition, "heavy weapons" were found on him.

Shortly after his arrest, the terrorist attacks took place in Brussels on March 22, 2016 .

At the end of March 2016, Abdeslam's extradition to France was authorized by a court order. Abdeslam had requested this himself and wanted to work with the French authorities. On April 27, 2016, he was extradited from Belgium to France .

process

On February 5, 2018, the first trial against Abdeslam began in Brussels, where he and Sofien Ayari had to answer for the shooting on March 15, 2016 in Forest / Vorst. He was accused of attempted murder and illegal possession of weapons as part of a terrorist organization. At the start of the trial, he refused to testify and refused to rise. On April 23, 2018, a chamber of the Tribunal de première instance de Bruxelles sentenced Abdeslam to 20 years in prison. This sentence was requested by the public prosecutor.
