The integrated Belgian police force consists of the Federal Police (Federale Politie, Police Fédérale) and the Local Police (Local Politie, Police Locale).

Since the structural reform in 2001, the police have been organized into two levels of an integrated police force and subordinate to the Federal Public Service of the Interior (Ministry of the Interior). Before that, they consisted of two different organizations. The federal police work nationwide and was formed from the Rijkswacht / Gendarmerie, which existed until 2001 and was subordinate to the Ministry of Defense. The local police, which currently has 185 police zones, was formed from local police units that were subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior.

The general commissioner is responsible for the overall management of the integrated police force. This office has been in the position of Chief Commissioner Marc De Mesmaeker since June 15, 2018.

The emergency number is 101.
