The reason for the protest is the sentencing of two ranchers to four years' imprisonment, as the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) accuses them of having started a fire on the federal government's land to cover up traces of poaching. The protesters in the park describe the state's approach and condemnation of the accused as "abuse of power by the authorities" and cite other reasons that justified the setting of the fire.
- London / United Kingdom : The Scot Gary Anderson wins the final of the PDC World Darts Championship 2016 .
- Pune / India : Tens of thousands of supporters of the radical Hindu volunteer movement Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) take part in a mass rally that is seen as a show of power by the politically increasingly influential organization.
- Silopi / Turkey : At least 28 PKK fighters and one civilian are killed in a military operation by the Turkish armed forces that is part of the banned Workers' Party PKK . Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had declared war on the PKK in his New Year's address.
- Tehran / Iran : The Saudi Arabian embassy is stormed by a violent crowd and set on fire. Saudi Arabia then breaks off diplomatic relations with Iran. There are also demonstrations and riots in Iraq's Wasit governorate and in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir .

- al-Sidr / Libya : The terrorist organization Islamic State is attacking the largest oil port in the country. The Libyan air force and security personnel from the Petrol Facilities Guard ( Ibrahim al-Jathran militia ) deployed on site manage to repel the attack. Two guards and ten IS fighters are killed in the fighting.
- Kabul / Afghanistan : The Taliban carry out two suicide attacks in the capital, in which one person is killed and 30 others are injured. One of the attacks is said to have targeted a Bundeswehr convoy under Brigadier General Michael Podzus. The general security situation is worsening, with attacks on the Spanish embassy in Kabul and the Indian consulate in Mazar-e-Sharif recently .
- Cologne / Germany : In the course of several allegations of abuse on the forecourt of Cologne Central Station , Police President Wolfgang Albers reports on the first results of the investigative group of the North Rhine-Westphalia police . According to this, numerous women out of a group of up to 1000 men are said to have been surrounded, harassed, sexually touched or robbed on New Year's Eve. - Beijing / China : Due to poor economic data from the industry, share prices on the stock market, including the leading index CSI 300 , are falling rapidly. For the first time in their history, the supervisory authorities are ordering all trading on the stock exchanges to be suspended for the rest of the day.
- Washington, DC / United States : As a result of the emissions scandal and for violating the Clean Air Act, the US Department of Justice is filing a civil action in a federal court in Detroit ( Michigan ) pertaining to the German automobile companies Volkswagen , Audi and Porsche .

- Ayvalık / Turkey : At least 30 bodies of refugees who tried to cross over to the Greek island of Lesbos in rubber dinghies were washed up on the beach in the coastal city . A dozen more people are rescued by the Turkish coast guard. Because of the stormy seas in this region, a crossing is considered particularly dangerous.
- Zurich / Switzerland : The International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) officially recognizes the discovery of radioactive, artificially generated chemical elements with the ordinal numbers 113 , 115 , 117 and 118, which has been in effect since December 30, 2015. These complete the seventh row in the periodic table of the elements .

- Los Angeles / United States : California Governor Jerry Brown declares a state of emergency for the Porter Ranch neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley . - Los Mochis / Mexico : President Enrique Peña Nieto announces the arrest of drug lord El Chapo . - Baghdad / Iraq : After a car bomb exploded, strangers storm a shopping center in a Shiite district of the city, killing at least 18 people and taking up to 40 others hostage. Iraqi security forces are bringing the situation under control. Two attackers die and four are arrested. Dozens of people are also killed or injured in terrorist attacks on a casino in al-Muqdadiyya , east of Baghdad . The Islamic State (IS) is committed to the attacks.
- Madaya / Syria : For the first time in three months, aid convoys laden with food and medicine reach the city near the Lebanese border, which is besieged by government troops of the Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad . An estimated 42,000 people have been trapped there for more than half a year. Several places besieged by Islamist rebels in Idlib province are also supplied with goods.
