Attacks in Jakarta on January 14, 2016

At least nine people were killed in the Sarinah Mall in the January 14, 2016 terrorist attack in Jakarta , Indonesia .

Sequence of events

At 10:50 a.m. (3:50 UTC) local time, up to 14 terrorists on motorcycles attempted to drive into the shopping center parking lot. However, this was guarded by a police station. The attackers immediately opened fire on the police officers and used hand grenades in addition to AK47 assault rifles . According to the authorities, three of the attackers and one police officer died in the exchange of fire.

After the police station was shut down, at least three terrorists broke into the Starbucks cafe on the mall's ground floor . Shortly thereafter, an explosion occurred there. The police, who had already approached the police station shortly after the attack, stormed the café.

At the same time, terrorists broke into the Cakrawala skyscraper belonging to the mall. There were at least six explosions there. The police began to "clean up" the skyscraper.

Four of the attackers hid in a cinema in the mall.

In the early afternoon, police declared the attack over and announced that five terrorists, two police officers and two visitors to the mall had been killed.

Perpetrator

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The night after the terrorist attack, the Indonesian police began a nationwide raid against terrorists.
