- Guatemala City / Guatemala : Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina resigns after a corruption affair . In the afternoon, Alejandro Maldonado Aguirre, his acting successor, will be sworn in.
- Kuala Lumpur / Malaysia : The sinking of a wooden boat with at least 70 Indonesian refugees off the Malaysian coast kills 14 refugees. Fishermen save 19 castaways.
Friday 4th September 2015
- Berlin / Germany , Vienna / Austria : Late in the evening, the Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann announced that Austria would allow refugees coming from Hungary to enter. He announced that, in coordination with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, it was decided "due to the current emergency on the Hungarian border" to allow the refugees to travel on to Germany and Austria.
- Budapest / Hungary : Refugees who had previously stayed in the Budapest Keleti pályaudvar train station set off on a walk towards Austria. The mass of people, which also crosses the autobahn, is accompanied by the media. Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announces that the refugees will be transported to the Austrian border by bus.
- Moscow / Russia : Russian President Vladimir Putin confirms that the Russian government is supporting the regime of Syria's ruler Bashar al-Assad in the civil war there with military material, training and logistical aid.

- Dushanbe / Tajikistan : At least 22 people are killed in clashes near the Tajik capital, which the government describes as a fight against terrorists.

- Chișinău / Moldova : Tens of thousands of people are calling for the resignation of President Nicolae Timofti and the leadership of the General Bank and the General Prosecutor's Office during demonstrations in the central square of the Moldovan capital . Another concern of the demonstrators is the return of the country to the path of European integration.
- Guatemala City / Guatemala : In the congressional and presidential elections , there will be a runoff for the office of head of state. On October 25, the top two, TV comedian Jimmy Morales and former First Lady Sandra Torres, will be running for election.
- Schwerin / Germany : The referendum on the reform of the judicial structure in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania fails due to the approval quorum .
- Warsaw / Poland : The referendum on changing the electoral law, political party financing and tax law fails because the voter turnout is too low, as only 7.8 percent of those eligible to vote vote on the project.

- Budapest / Hungary : After deliberations on the refugee crisis in Hungary, at which the state of the new fence on the border with Serbia , which is supposed to keep refugees at this EU external border in the future, is being discussed, Defense Minister Csaba Hende announces his resignation. His successor is State Secretary István Simicskó.
- Hakkâri / Turkey : At least 16 soldiers are killed in an attack by the PKK on Turkish security forces in Dağlıca in the province of Hakkâri in the extreme south-east of the country after a military convoy got into a booby trap and PKK fighters opened fire on the soldiers. The Turkish military responded with air strikes and bombed 23 targets in the Yüksekova district .
- Port of Spain / Trinidad and Tobago : The opposition People's National Movement party wins the election for the House of Representatives .

- Beirut / Lebanon : A sandstorm affects public life, especially in Lebanon and Syria . A total of ten people are killed. In Lebanon, schools and other public institutions are being closed by decision of the authorities.
- Vatican City : Pope Francis has issued a decree simplifying the process of annulment of a Catholic marriage.

- Port of Spain / Trinidad and Tobago : Two days after the House of Representatives election , Keith Rowley is sworn in as the new Trinidadian Prime Minister.
- Riyadh / Saudi Arabia : The current Arabic-language edition of National Geographic magazine is banned in Saudi Arabia for cultural reasons that apparently describe the blasphemy. On the cover the head of the Catholic Church can be seen with the headline "Church reform - this is how Francis leads the silent revolution".
- Vejle / Denmark : After hundreds of migrants, most of them from Syria and Iraq and coming from Germany , want to travel on to Sweden via Denmark , the police in Sydjylland stop rail traffic between Flensburg and Padborg and temporarily block the motorway. In addition, ferry traffic between Fehmarn and Rødby will be stopped.

- Belfast / United Kingdom : The First Minister of the Community Government of Northern Ireland , Peter Robinson , and with the exception of Finance Minister Arlene Foster all other ministers of the ruling Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) are stepping down from their posts. Arlene Foster will be the new First Minister for Northern Ireland. The background to the political crisis is the murder of a former IRA man by the possibly existing structures of the Provisional IRA, which is classified as a terrorist organization and whose existence is denied by the coalition partner of the Northern Irish government, Sinn Féin .
- Caracas / Venezuela : The Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López is sentenced to almost 14 years by a court in Caracas for "inciting violence and conspiracy" and is therefore held responsible by the socialist government for the bloody riots last year . At that time, López, then mayor of the capital, called for demonstrations against the Nicolás Maduro government due to the poor economic situation and the high crime rate. Human rights groups see López as a political prisoner and are demanding his release.
- Johannesburg / South Africa : Researchers at the Witwatersrand University discover a new ancestor of humans who is called Homo naledi . More than 1,550 hominini bones from 15 individuals have been found in a secluded chamber in the Rising Star Cave , which the researchers believe is the burial site. The exact age of the finds is not known.

- Bujumbura / Burundi : The Burundian army chief Prime Niyongabo narrowly escapes an assassination attempt. Six people were killed in the attack in Bujumbura, while the general himself remained unharmed. Since President Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would run for a third term, contrary to the constitution, and his controversial re-election in July, Burundi has been shaken by violence.
- Mecca / Saudi Arabia : Shortly before the start of this year's pilgrimage season , a crane falls on the Holy Mosque at the time of sunset prayer . Over 100 people were killed and well over 200 others injured. At the time of the accident it was very windy and rainy.
- Singapore / Singapore: The ruling People's Action Party wins early parliamentary elections and obtains 83 of the 89 parliamentary seats.

- Leh / India: On the Sino- Indian demarcation line, there are clashes between troops from both countries. In this border conflict, both India and China each claim parts that are under the control of the neighboring state for their own national territory.

- Berlin / Germany : Due to the refugee crisis, the German interior minister Thomas de Maizière has temporarily introduced border controls at the German- Austrian border within the framework of the rules of the Schengen Agreement . After this was introduced, the first smugglers were soon arrested.

Four of the fatalities are German and the other three are Czech . So far, the exact cause of the accident is unknown, suspected are drifts after heavy snowfall on the weekend.
- New York / United States : Chairman Mogens Lykketoft ( Denmark ) opens the 70th General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA) and calls for the promises made regarding sustainable development to be implemented quickly.
- Tórshavn / Faroe Islands : Two weeks after the parliamentary elections, the social democrat Aksel Johannesen is elected as the new Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands .

- Düsseldorf / Germany : The International Olympic Committee announces the candidate cities for the Olympic Summer Games 2024 : In addition to Hamburg , Los Angeles , Budapest , Paris and Rome will compete.
- Illapel / Chile : An earthquake of intensity 8.4 around 55 kilometers off the coast of Chile rocked the evening, the center of the country. At least eleven people are killed. Warnings of tsunamis affect the entire Pacific region . Tidal waves four and a half meters high flood streets in several coastal towns in Chile.

- Ouagadougou / Burkina Faso : In Burkina Faso, West Africa, soldiers from the former Presidential Guard Blaise Compaorés under General Gilbert Diendéré seize President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Isaac Zida of the transitional government and declare them deposed. New elections should have taken place on October 11th. The military junta appoints Gilbert Diendéré as the new head of state.

- Basel / Switzerland : With the 178 meter high Roche Tower (Building 1) , Switzerland's tallest skyscraper is officially opened in Basel.
- Berlin / Germany : Frank-Jürgen Weise , Chairman of the Board of the Federal Employment Agency , will be the new President of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees . The head of the agency, Manfred Schmidt , had resigned the day before for personal reasons. From the opposition side there is massive criticism of the authority in connection with the increased influx of refugees into the Federal Republic.
- Tokyo / Japan : With the controversial reform of defense policy, the Japanese parliament adopts one of the most important political goals of Prime Minister Shinzō Abe . With this new military doctrine, Japan's armed forces will in future be able to provide military support to its allies in the event of enemy attacks. The opposition sees the new security reform as a violation of the pacifist post-war constitution.

With his visit, Francis would like to strengthen the Catholic faith on the island republic, which is led by socialists.
- Cairo / Egypt : One week after the resignation of the entire Egyptian government on allegations of corruption, President Abd al-Fattah as-Sisi swore in the new cabinet under the former oil minister Sherif Ismail as the new head of government. In relation to the old cabinet, 14 of the 33 ministers will be replaced.
- Santo Domingo / Dominican Republic : The Dominican Health Department announces that 57 people have died of 5220 registered dengue outbreaks this year, an increase compared to the previous year.

- Kathmandu / Nepal : In its new constitution, Nepal declares itself to be a secular state. With this constitution, Nepal is the first Asian country to protect the rights of lesbians , gays , bisexuals and transgender people .
- Lille / France : The Spanish national basketball team wins the European championship with an 80:63 final success over the selection of Lithuania .
- Wolfsburg / Germany : It is known that the car manufacturer Volkswagen has manipulated the control examinations of the exhaust emissions of several diesel models and thus circumvented the exhaust gas regulations in force in the United States . The US Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) has determined differences in the exhaust gas values on the road and in the test test and has identified software that recognizes unnatural driving as a test test, whereupon the exhaust gas treatment takes up its full functionality in order to minimize the nitrogen oxides emitted .

- Yerevan / Armenia : Armenian officials claim that three female citizens in the province of Tavush were killed in Azerbaijani shelling. Due to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, relations between the two Caucasus countries are extremely tense.
- Mecca / Saudi Arabia : In a mass panic during the Islamic pilgrimage Hajj , over 750 people are killed near Mecca and over 880 others injured.
- Ouagadougou / Burkina Faso : With the return of Interim President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Isaac Zida to their offices, the coup of General Gilbert Diendéré is over. The latter apologizes for the coup which resulted in at least ten deaths in the Burkinabe capital. In Ouagadougou, voices are being raised to hold the general accountable for the coup , contrary to the proposal of the West African Economic Community (ECOWAS). It is not yet clear whether the planned elections can take place on October 11th.
- Washington, DC / United States : With Pope Francis , a Catholic head of the church speaks for the first time before the US Congress . In his speech, the Holy Father addresses environmental protection, makes a plea for immigrants and calls for the abolition of the death penalty.

- New York / United States : Pope Francis opened the UN - Sustainable Development Summit .
- Singapore / Singapore: Singapore's Foreign Minister Kasiviswanathan Shanmugam has sharply criticized the inability of Indonesian politicians because of massive forest fires on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan due to slash and burn operations by land and palm oil plantation owners that could not be brought under control. High levels of smog in the city-state are causing schools to close.
- Washington, DC / United States: John Boehner , Speaker of the United States House of Representatives , announces his resignation from all offices, effective October 2015.
- Wolfsburg / Germany : Following the resignation of Martin Winterkorn due to the scandal surrounding manipulated exhaust gas values , Matthias Müller is appointed as the new CEO of Volkswagen AG .

- The Hague / Netherlands : The suspected Islamist Ahmad Al Faqi Al Mahdi from the rebel group Ansar Dine is the International Criminal Court for war crimes and the destruction of religious buildings and monuments (nine mausoleums and a mosque for World Heritage Site included) in 2012 in Mali's Timbuktu transferred.
- La Paz / Bolivia : The Bolivian parliament passes a law that, subject to approval in a referendum next February, allows President Evo Morales to run for a fourth term in 2019.

- Bangui / Central African Republic : In renewed fighting between Muslims and Christians in the capital of the Central African Republic, at least 36 people are killed and another 80 are injured.
- Barcelona / Spain : In the parliamentary elections in Catalonia , the forces that support independence from mainland Spain win the majority of the parliamentary seats. The turnout is unexpectedly high at 76 percent. According to the announcement by Regional President Artur Mas, he is aiming for independence from Catalonia by 2017. The central government in Madrid sees the separatism efforts as a clear violation of the Spanish constitution, which stipulates the indivisibility of the Spanish nation.
- Georgetown / Guyana : The Guyanese President David Arthur Granger accuses Venezuela of a military build-up in the common border area and evaluates this as a continuation of aggressive and hostile behavior towards Guyana. The common border line was resolved in an arbitration award in 1899 with international mediation, to which Venezuela agreed. However, Venezuela lays claim to the westernmost parts of Guyana.
- Linz / Austria : The previous conservative-green government loses its majority in the state elections in Upper Austria . In the election dominated by the refugee crisis, the people's parties, the Upper Austrian People's Party and the Social Democratic Party of Austria, suffered significant losses, while the Freedom Party of Austria doubled its share of the vote.
- Philadelphia / United States : In his speech on World Family Day, Pope Francis avoids providing impulses for the upcoming synod on the vocation and mission of the family in the modern world.
- Podgorica / Montenegro : During protests in the Montenegrin capital, around 4,000 demonstrators demand the resignation of Prime Minister Milo Đukanović and early parliamentary elections. The head of government is accused of corruption.

- Barrow / United States : The oil company Shell stops its controversial oil and gas wells in the Arctic in Areal Burger J in the Chukchi Sea northwest of Barrow, Alaska . The wells are too expensive, too unsuccessful and politically too sensitive. The borehole is sealed. Environmentalists welcome this decision.
