Nicolae Timofti (born December 22, 1948 in Ciutuleşti ) is a Moldovan lawyer and politician . Timofti was elected President of the Republic of Moldova on March 16, 2012 . He held this office from March 23, 2012 to December 23, 2016.

Life

Nicolae Timofti, son of a family of Siberia - deportees , studied until 1972 Law at the University of Chisinau and worked as a consultant in the Ministry of Justice. He worked as a district judge in Chișinău from 1976 and as a judge of the Supreme Council from 1980.

After Moldova declared independence in 1990, Timofti became vice-chairman of the Supreme Court and served as head of the College of Criminal Offenses. From 1996 to 2001 he served as chairman of the Chisinau Chamber of Appeal, but was dismissed for no reason shortly after the Communist Party (PCRM) came to power. In 1996 Timofti also became chairman of the Moldovan Judges Association.

On March 16, 2012, Timofti won the election as President of the Republic of Moldova. He was the first independent head of state in his country. Timofti is considered to be pro-European. Its success is seen as a possible turning point towards a western orientation of the former Soviet republic. Before that, the election of a candidate had failed for two and a half years due to the veto of the communist opposition. With 62 votes, Timofti received one vote more than the constitutionally provided three-fifths majority in parliament.

Timofti is married and has three sons.
