Marian Lupu (born June 20, 1966 in Bălți ) is a Moldovan politician . From 2005 to 2009 he was and has been President of the Moldovan Parliament again since December 30, 2010 . Since 2009 he has been chairman of the Partidul Democrat din Moldova . From 2010 to 2012 he was the acting head of state of the Republic of Moldova .

Life

Marian Lupu studied economics at the State University of Moldova in Chișinău . After graduating, he worked for the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization in Washington and Geneva . From 1987 to 1991 he graduated from the Russian Plekhanov University of Economics .

After the 2001 parliamentary elections , which were won by the Moldovan communists , Lupu became deputy minister of economics in the new government under President Vladimir Voronin . In August 2003 he became Minister of Economic Affairs. After the parliamentary elections in 2005 he was elected President of Parliament. Lupu was a representative of the more western-oriented wing of the communists. In 2009, after the controversial elections in April, he was considered a possible successor to President Voronin. Shortly after the elections in June 2009, however, Lupu surprisingly left the Communist Party and joined the ranks of the opposition, which accused the Communists of election fraud. On July 10, 2009 he was elected chairman of the Partidul Democrat . After the parliamentary elections in 2010 , he was re-elected President of Parliament on December 30, 2010 and was the country's provisional head of state until 2012.
