Igor Dodon
Igor Nikolajewitsch Dodon ( Cyrillic Игорь Николаевич Додон; born February 18, 1975 in Sadova , Călărași Rajon ) is a Moldovan politician and chairman of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM). He is a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova . He served as Minister for Trade and Economy in the governments of Vasile Tarlev and Zinaida Greceanîi from September 2006 to September 2009. Since December 23, 2016 he has been President of the Republic of Moldova .
Life
Dodon was born on February 18, 1975 in Sadova, a village in the Călărași district of the then MSSR ( Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic ). He studied economics at the State University of Agriculture (Universitatea Agrară de Stat din Moldova) in Chișinău and received his doctorate in 1998 from the Academy of Economics (Academia de Studii Economice a Moldovei) in Chisinau.
He is married and has three children.
Dodon was appointed Foreign Minister for Trade and Economy in the Tarlev Cabinet in May 2005 . In September 2006 he took over the position of Minister for Trade and Economy. He remained in office when Zinaida Greceanîi became Prime Minister on March 31, 2008. From 2008 to 2009 Dodon was also Deputy Prime Minister under Greceanîi. On September 14, 2009, the Greceanîi government ended and with it Dodon's term as minister. Dodon was a prominent member of the Communist Party of Moldova .
In 2011 Dodon narrowly lost the election as mayor of Chișinău; Dorin Chirtoacă won. In September 2011 Dodon was elected President of the Moldovan Chess Federation.
Together with Zinaida Greceanîi and Veronica Abramciuc , Dodon left the Communist Party in November 2011, invoking the hope that an agreement with the government could be worked out to elect a president and end the ongoing constitutional crisis that followed the resignation of Vladimir Voronin in 2009 (see parliamentary elections April 2009 and July 29, 2009 ). Together with Greceanîi and Abramciuc, Dodon also voted in parliament in early 2012 for the pro-European presidential candidate Nicolae Timofti in order to enable a government to be formed. According to his own statements, he regretted this decision shortly afterwards.
Dodon joined the Socialist Party (PSRM) and was elected party leader on December 18, 2011. As a result, numerous other prominent members converted from communists to socialists.
Dodon ran in the 2016 presidential election in the Republic of Moldova , in which he won the second ballot with 52.18%. Since taking office as president, Dodon has been officially non-party, but remains close to the PSRM.
After its refusal to approve several pro-European ministers, the Moldovan Constitutional Court temporarily suspends Dodon's powers.
On September 9, 2018, Dodon was slightly injured in a traffic accident. An oncoming car crashed into its escort and one car in Dodon's column overturned.
