Vasile Petru Tarlev ( Russian Василий Павлович Тарлев ; born October 6, 1963 in Bașcalia ) is a Moldovan politician of Bulgarian descent and was head of government of the Republic of Moldova from 2001 to 2008.

During his studies, Tarlev devoted himself to engineering and graduated with a degree in engineering . He became a member of the Communist Party (PCRM) and received a seat in the newly formed parliament. On April 15, 2001, he ran in the first parliamentary election and was elected Prim-ministru (head of government ) by parliament with 75 out of 101 votes . The result was confirmed in a second election on April 19.

After the parliamentary elections in 2005, Vasile Tarlev was re-elected. On March 20, 2008, he resigned from his position. President Vladimir Voronin had previously put pressure on Tarlev to persuade him to take this step. Voronin said he wanted "new forces" to come to power. As his successor, he proposed the previous Deputy Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanîi .

Tarlev subsequently left the ruling communists and joined Uniunea Centristă din Moldova (abbreviation UCM; German  Center Union of Moldova ), of which he was elected chairman in September 2008. In the elections in April 2009 , the UCM clearly failed to make it into parliament with just under 2.8% of the vote. In the early elections in July 2009 , the UCM candidates are on the list of the Partidul Social Democrat (PSD; Social Democratic Party). Tarlev occupies second place on the list after the PSD chairman Dumitru Braghiș .
