Zinaida Greceanîi

Zinaida Greceanîi ( Russian Зинаида Гречаная / Sinaida Grečanaja ) (born February 7, 1956 in Tomsk Oblast , Soviet Union , today Russia ) is a Moldovan politician . She was Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova from March 2008 to September 2009.

Zinaida Greceanîi's parents were deported from Bessarabia to Siberia , where she was born. At the end of the 1960s the family was able to return home. Greceanîi completed her studies in economics at the technical college of finance and economics and at the Moldovan State University in Chișinău . From 1974 to 1994 she worked in the Briceni County Administration. From 1994 she held various posts in the Moldovan Ministry of Finance. In 2002 she became Minister of Finance and remained in that position until she was appointed First Vice Prime Minister of Moldova in 2005. Immediately after the surprising resignation of the previous Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev , President Vladimir Voronin proposed her as the new Prime Minister on March 20, 2008. The following day she was elected to office by parliament. Greceanîi was close to the Communist Party (PCRM) and entered the parliamentary elections as a non-party on their electoral list.

After the parliamentary elections in April 2009 , she ran as a presidential candidate for the communists, but missed the necessary parliamentary majority of one vote. In the new elections in July 2009 , she was the second top candidate for the PCRM after party leader Voronin. After the communists' narrow electoral defeat and President Voronin's resignation, Greceanîi also announced on September 9, 2009 that she would step down from her position as head of government. On September 14, she handed over the official business to the communist Vitalie Pîrlog , who acted as acting head of government and was replaced soon after by the Liberal Democrat Vlad Filat .

In November 2011, Zinaida Greceanîi made headlines when she and two other MPs announced that they were leaving the Communist faction. The aim of the group was to persuade the parties of the governing coalition to elect Greceanîis as president. To date, however, the move has been unsuccessful. Since the elections in April 2009, the tight majority in parliament had prevented the free choice of a new head of state.

On June 8, 2019, Parliament elected her as its new President. However, the Constitutional Court declared the election null and void.

Greceanîi is married and has two children.
