Serafim Urechean (also Urecheanu ; born February 2, 1950 in Larga , Briceni district ) is a Moldovan politician and former mayor of the city of Chișinău .

Serafim Urechean has two children and two grandchildren. He is a member of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (CLRAE).

Urechean took over the post of mayor of the city of Chișinău on August 9, 1994 as the successor to Nicolae Costin . After he took office, the church tower of the Catedrala Naşterea Domnului was rebuilt and the church was restored to its original appearance. In local transport he opened new trolleybus lines and increased the capacities of existing, important lines in order to better connect the city districts with one another.

In February 1999 he was head of government of the Republic of Moldova for a few days. In 2005 he took part in the Moldovan parliamentary elections as a presidential candidate for the electoral alliance Blocul electoral “Moldova Democrată” .

On April 18, 2005, in the run-up to the mayoral elections on July 10, 2005 in Chișinău, Serafim Urechean announced his resignation as mayor. His term of office ended on April 20th with the formal handover of office to his successor, the former Vice Mayor, Vasile Ursu . After serving as mayor, on June 27, 2005 he became head of the parliamentary group of his party Alianța “Moldova Noastră” (AMN).

In the parliamentary elections in April 2009 , he ran again as the top candidate of the AMN, of which he is chairman. He also personally participated in rallies against the communist government, which was accused of electoral fraud.
