Giorgi Gacharia (Georgian გიორგი გახარია, English transcription Giorgi Gakharia ; born March 19, 1975 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian politician. He has been Prime Minister of Georgia since September 8, 2019 . Previously, he was Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior. He belongs to the Georgian Dream party .

Education and early career

From 1992 to 1994 Gacharia studied history at Tbilisi State University and from 1994 to 1999 he studied at Moscow's Lomonosov University, Moscow , where he received a master's degree in political science . From 2002 to 2004 he studied business management at the Higher Business School of Lomonosov University . He then went into the private sector and took over the position of General Director of the SFK Group from May 2004 to November 2008 . He then worked for LSG Sky Chefs , a subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, in the Eastern Europe and CIS department .

He started his political career in March 2013 when he became the Ombudsman for Economy of Georgia; He held this office until July 2016. From December 2014 to September 2016 he was Secretary of the Economic Council. From November 27, 2016 to November 13, 2017, he was also Minister for Economic Affairs and Sustainable Development. Giorgi Gacharia was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia on November 13, 2017 and also took over the post of Deputy Prime Minister on July 17, 2018. After violent crackdowns against protesters who demonstrated against the government in 2019, Gacharia was asked to resign.

He was nominated as prime minister on September 3, 2019 to succeed Mamuka Bakhtadze , who had resigned the day before. The appointment of Gacharia was controversial and some opposition politicians left parliament in protest during the debate on his candidacy. However, since the ruling Georgian Dream party has a super-majority in parliament, he was confirmed as the new Prime Minister on September 8, 2019.
