Nikolos (Nika) Gilauri ( Georgian ნიკოლოზ (ნიკა) გილაური ; born February 14, 1975 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian politician. From February 2004 to August 2007 he was Minister of Energy, from September 2007 to February 2009 Minister of Finance of Georgia. He was Georgian Prime Minister from February 6, 2009 to June 30, 2012.

Life

Nika Gilauri studied at the Tbilisi State University economics and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in foreign trade from. He then studied economics and finance at the University of Limerick in Limerick ( Ireland ). He earned a Master of Arts (BA) in International Business Management from Temple University in Philadelphia , USA .

1999 worked for the Dublin International Financial Center and for the fund management company Invesco . In 2000 he became a financial advisor for energy saving projects at the Philadelphia Small Business Development Center . A year later he went back to Georgia, advising the telephone company Telecom Georgia on financial matters. In 2002 he advised the Spanish energy company Iberdrola , which had invested in Georgia. In 2003 and 2004 he worked as financial controller for the Irish energy company ESBI, which operates in Georgia .

After the rose revolution , Gilauri first became energy minister on February 17, 2004. After a series of power outages between December 2004 and February 2005, there was speculation about Gilauri's early release. However, Gilauri put forward a program to overcome the energy crisis. In 2006 he played a key role in negotiations with Azerbaijan and Iran to suspend gas supplies to Georgia. In March 2006, his announcement of a possible sale of the Georgian gas network to the Russian Gazprom group caused controversy with the US . He later rowed back, claiming that there had been no negotiations with Gazprom .

On September 7, 2007 he became Minister of Finance of Georgia and in December 2008 Vice Prime Minister. After Grigol Mgaloblishvili resigned from the post of head of government, Nika Gilauri was nominated as his successor by President Mikheil Saakashvili . The Georgian Parliament approved the proposal on February 6, 2009. On June 30, 2012, President Saakashvili nominated his successor, Vano Merabishvili, as head of government. Gilauri has been named head of the state-owned private equity fund JSC Partnership Fund.
