Presidential election in the Republic of Moldova 2016

The 2016 presidential election in the Republic of Moldova was the first direct election of the President of Moldova since 1996. In the second ballot, Igor Dodon ( PSRM ) was elected President.

prehistory

After the Republic of Moldova gained independence, there were direct elections in 1991 and 1996. After that, following a change in the law, the president was elected by parliament. This change was declared unconstitutional by the Moldovan Constitutional Court in March 2016.

Candidates

In pre-election polls, Igor Dodon ( PSRM ) was the favorite. They were followed by Maia Sandu ( PAS ) and Marian Lupu ( PDM ). Shortly before the election, however, Marian Lupu announced his withdrawal.

First ballot

The first ballot took place on October 30, 2016. Igor Dodon got 48.23% and Maia Sandu got 38.42% of the vote. The remaining votes were distributed among the other seven applicants. The turnout was 49.03%. Young people and people from urban areas had voted for the surprisingly successful Maia Sandu. In the autonomous region of Gagauzia, however, the pro-Russian socialist leader Igor Dodon won 91 percent of the votes, while there was uncertainty about Dodon's overhang among voters from Transnistria.

The second ballot took place on November 13, 2016. Here was Igor Dodon 52.11% (834,081 votes) and Maia Sandu 47.89% (766,593 votes). The turnout was 53.45%.
