Mihai Ghimpu (born November 19, 1951 in Colonița , Chișinău ) is a Moldovan politician . From August 2009 he was President of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and from September 11, 2009 to December 28, 2010 he was also acting President of the Republic .

education

Mihai Ghimpu studied law at the State University of Moldova and then worked as a lawyer.

Political career

In 1988 Ghimpu was one of the founders and later a board member of Frontul Popular din Moldova ( German  People's Front of Moldova ), which campaigned for reforms in the Moldovan SSR and was largely supported by the Romanian- speaking population. From various quarters, however, the Frontul Popular was also accused of pronounced nationalism and hostility towards ethnic minorities. The policy of the Frontul Popular was also one of the triggers of the Transnistrian conflict . From 1990 to 1998 Ghimpu was a member of parliament. In 1998 he was elected chairman of the Partidul Liberal ( German  Liberal Party ). Since 2007 he has been a member of the Chișinău City Council. From 2007 to 2008 he was President of the City Council. On August 28, 2009, Ghimpu was elected as the new Speaker of Parliament in a controversial parliamentary session . The largest parliamentary faction of the communists had previously left the hall and viewed the election of Ghimpu as a breach of the constitution because of the circumstances.

After the resignation of Vladimir Voronin on September 11, 2009 , Mihai Ghimpu took over the business of the President.

In June 2010 Ghimpu caused a crisis within the governing coalition "Alliance for European Integration". Without consulting the other governing parties, he declared June 28th to be “the day of the Soviet occupation and a day of remembrance for the victims of communism”. He was then asked by the chairman of the Democratic Party, Marian Lupu, and other politicians of the coalition parties to withdraw the decree. Critics such as former President Vladimir Voronin of the opposition Communists threw Ghimpu before that he had with the now institutionalized condemnation former membership of Moldova to the Soviet Union were, the Moldovan government declared illegitimate, but the independence of the country is based solely on the forced cession by Romania to the Soviet Union in 1940 and the subsequent collapse of the multi-ethnic Soviet state .

After the parliamentary elections in 2010 , Ghimpu stepped down on December 30th as President of Parliament and thus also as acting head of state to the chairman of the Democratic Party, Marian Lupu .

Positions

Ghimpu describes himself as a unionist, ie advocate for the unification of Romania and Moldova . However, after being elected President of Parliament, he stated that this was only his personal opinion. Unification with Romania is not one of the medium-term goals of his party and he will therefore not pursue them either. He is a strong advocate of Moldova's membership of NATO. He repeatedly questioned the autonomy rights of the autonomous region of Gagauzia , which is mostly inhabited by the Turkic people of the Gagauz , and called for a nationwide referendum on their abolition.

Ghimpu is considered a sharp opponent of the Russian language in Moldova, which he described, among other things, as the language of the occupiers who destroy the Romanian language . Russian youth organizations in Moldova therefore organized protests against Ghimpu and he also drew criticism from the ranks of his ruling coalition.

family

Mihai Ghimpu is the uncle of the mayor of Chișinău and deputy chairman of the Partidul Liberal, Dorin Chirtoacă . Mihai Ghimpu's older brother Gheorghe Ghimpu (1937-2000) was a well-known Moldovan dissident who had campaigned for the separation of Moldova from the Soviet Union and unification with Romania since the 1970s and was temporarily imprisoned for it.
